The Havanese descends from Bichon dog types of the Mediterranean area. Exactly how the dogs came to that region and to have their distinct appearance remains a disputed issue. Some people believe that the dogs originally came from Maltese stock, while others suggest that they were a cross of small Poodles and Bolognese dogs. Whatever the ancient cross, the dogs emigrated to Cuba (perhaps with Italians sailors), where they once lived as companions and performers.
In Cuba, the Havanese were bred by a wealthy woman who lived with them and gave them as gifts. From her home, they spread to palaces, mansions and estates across the country. Their numbers remained small, however, and they nearly reached extinction during the middle of the 20th century. Emigration to the United States and the establishment of a national club aided their revival. Today, the dogs are small, yet energetic and hearty pets.
